COVID TESTING Guidelines per Erie County
This information is also available at: erie.gov/covidtest
12/21/21: Quick Recent points from Dr Gale Burstein (Erie County Health Commissioner)
Schools may accept either negative NAAT or antigen test results for a return to participation in school activities following illness, as long as they do not have a known exposure to someone with COVID-19, and if symptomatic, they are well enough to participate in school [“not have rhinorrhea (runny nose) or cough severe enough to make mask wear difficult or unhygienic, be fever-free for 24 hours without use of fever-reducing medication.”]
Erie County is not accepting negative at-home or over-the-counter COVID-19 test results performed outside a supervised laboratory setting. A positive at-home or over-the-counter COVID-19 test result is considered a true positive, and should be reported to our Epidemiology Office (call (716) 858-2929).
Physicians’ offices should review these three documents:
Physicians and health care providers writing letters for students to take “mask breaks” in school should note this section:
Mask Breaks in School: The emergency regulations under 10 NYCRR 2.60 and the Commissioner’s Determination on Indoor Face Masking Pursuant to 10 NYCRR 2.60 do not include “mask breaks.” This is in accordance with CDC guidance recommending universal masking in schools to keep children in school and let them be closer together without risking close contact exposure and quarantines. Under these same regulations, local health officials are given the duty and accompanying discretion as to how the requirements will be enforced.
12/8/2021: Commissioner’s Determination on COVID-19 Testing Pursuant to 1-0 NYCRR 2.62
11/24/2021: Return to School Algorithm (COVID-19 signs or symptoms after COVID-19 vaccination)
Also, we updated our Community-based Testing Resources for Students and Parents in Erie County document to reflect the NYS guidance update.
The COVID-19 Pediatric Oral Treatment Study Information
About This Study:
This University at Buffalo clinical trial is recruiting children and adolescents who have been recently diagnosed with COVID-19 to see if a new oral medicine reduces the risk of severe illness due to an underlying medical condition. Participants will receive the study medicine twice daily for 5 days and will be in the study for about 5 weeks.
If your child/teen is interested in participating, the study team will schedule a screening visit to determine if he/she can join the study. At the screening visit, the study team will ask about the COVID-19 symptoms, medical history, vaccinations, contraception (if relevant), medications, and ability to swallow tablets.
Your child/teen will need to attend study visits involving different procedures such as: nasal swabs, blood draws, and vital sign testing. These may include a combination of in-person visits at the clinic on the Downtown Medical Campus or in the comfort of your home. The total compensation if all study visits are completed is $750.
Who Can Participate?
This study may be an option for children and teens who are:
· 6 to 17 years old
· Having at least one sign/symptom of COVID-19
· Able to swallow tablets
· Able to meet minimum weight requirements
· Having at least 1 of the following characteristics or underlying medical conditions:
