This is the area around the old Children’s hospital from about Elmwood and North St. and extending north to about forest Ave near buffalo state college. Here you will find many shops and restaurants. Safe and walkable to Oshei Children’s.
2. Downtown/Allentown:
The area downtown near the hospital is becoming a more popular place to live. Right near the medical campus there are apartments and condos with new ones being build on a daily basis. There are many restaurants and bars in the downtown area. Safety is a little more of an issue the farther you go downtown (especially from a walking standpoint). Allentown is an area just next to downtown that has many historical apartments and houses for rent and for sale. There are many bars and restaurants in this area. Easy walk/drive to the hospital. Many residents live in Allentown. Fairly safe-probably comparable to downtown and Elmwood village.
3. North Buffalo:
Just north of Elmwood village there is a residential area that is still within the city-north buffalo. This would be about a 15 minute drive to the new hospital. Rent is a little less expensive here than Elmwood village or Allentown. Buying a house is also slightly more affordable here. Safety is a little better too. Many people say that north buffalo feels more suburban even though it is still in the city. Hertel Ave has many shops and restaurants--Loyd Taco Factory is a must! Doesn't have quite as much to offer as Elmwood village in terms of social scene but the area is "up and coming" and will continue to have more to do in the next few years.
4. The Suburbs:
Kenmore, Tonawanda, Amherst, Williamsville, and the Southtowns are the major suburbs. Residents live in these neighborhoods often but the commute becomes a little longer. Safety is as close to perfect as it can be in the suburbs, as expected. Amherst was voted the "safest town in America" back in the 90s.
